Angel Architecture sponsors art talk

This year’s Uplyme Church Art Festival launches on Wednesday 22 August with a talk by local expert Pamela Simpson. Pam has taught in London art schools for over 30 years and now lives in West Dorset.  Her talk, ‘The Journey Towards Abstraction’, looks at aspects of paintings that led artists towards a new way of painting in the 20th century. These include early cave painting, Giotto, John Constable, Van Gogh, Ben Nicholson, Sonia Delauney, Mark Rothko and Bridget Riley. West Bay chapel reopens as visitor centre

When the West Bay chapel reopens to the public on Wednesday 1 August as a visitor centre, it marks the latest stage in the life of a modest but remarkable building. ‘It was built in 1849 as a simple place of worship for shipbuilders, fishermen and their families,’ said architect and historic buildings consultant Kim Sankey of Angel Architecture in Charmouth. What is a listed building?

A listed building is a building of special architectural or historic interest that has been identified for protection through legislation. Listing is the process by which buildings are added to the statutory list by the Designations Team of Historic England. Compiled under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, the list includes a great variety of structures from castles to telephone boxes. Listing gives protection to historic buildings and requires their special interest (significance) to be taken into account before any changes are made to them that would affect their special interest (significance). Work underway at West Bay Discovery Centre

Plans are coming together to restore West Bay’s former Methodist Church and transform it into the West Bay Discovery Centre. Bridport Area Development Trust, the local charity behind the project, has announced that after a formal tender process, R&C Building Conservation of Shaftesbury have been appointed the contract to deliver the construction-related part of the project.
