“You’re not going to get success if you are not enjoying yourself and inspired by work.”
Joanna Bacon, Managing Partner of Allies & Morrison Architects
Working on listed buildings requires a fair amount of detective work. We have a go-to list of sources we use on most projects which include the local archives and often Dorset History Centre. The most useful tools are the tithe maps and tithe apportionments together with local census data and many other obscure records. It is very much a case of knowing where to look to find the answers. The starting point for all our research is the Royal Commission for Historical Monuments which only exists for Dorset.
All applications for listed building consent require Architects to demonstrate their understanding of the significance of the building which is be altered or extended. The scope of this research will depend on the scale of any development and will be proportionate to the importance of the building and the impact of the works. This document is called a heritage statement and a typical example is included at this Sample Heritage Statement
