“Failure is not an option.”Smithsonian Air and Space Museum
Many listed building owners ‘inherit’ problems that due to works carried out by previous generations through ignorance rather than intentionally. These are unauthorised works and can if unresolved lead to enforcement action by the local authority.
Very frequently works that have not been subject to listed building consent can be granted retrospectively. Rarely are works taken down or owners prosecuted. More often it is a question of working with the local Conservation Officer and being open to the use of traditional materials, for example, lime plasters, renders and mortar, and products such as conservation rooflights, installed by skilled craftsmen to rectify damage and to achieve a harmonious appearance and improvement to the condition of the building fabric.
We have successfully negotiated good outcomes for our clients who have either been ill advised by those lacking any specialist knowledge or appreciation of the historic context.
