One notable thing about the way I live now is how rarely I use the car, not because I have a broken leg at the moment but before that I only used it to go on site visits and occasionally to Cornwall, Cardiff, Bath or London.

Now I have a senior railcard so public transport is preferable on so many levels. I grow a lot of my own fruit, cherries, apples, pears, plums and rhubarb, not only self-sufficient but rewarding to have a sactuary for my bees and other wildlife.

Those of us who live alone struggle to be sustainable as we are cooking and heating a whole house just for our own benefit, but that’s where batch cooking and having a wood burner makes sense. Yet on reflection, nearing retirement age I feel even more strongly that I have a moral duty to give something back, by helping other women who are coming up behind me and in a way that is the most sustainable goal of all.
