It is probably no coincidence that when my headmistress said to me at the age of 17 ‘you will never be an architect’ that set me on a course to prove her wrong and all the other people including family members who have just had to suck it up.

Women can achieve anything and will try even harder if discouraged by others, even other women. I trained, practised, lived, breathed and slept architecture from 1979-1986 and no-one else’s negative opinion mattered. I believe if you want something badly enough you will find a way to succeed, or in the legendary words of the icon Dolly Parton, RIP.

“You’ll never do a whole lot unless you’re brave enough to try.”
