There is something odd happening amongst the architectural fraternity, all my contemporaries have either retired, moved away or both. Is this a reflection of the planning system? We all know that the current planning system is not fit for purpose, but we struggle on.
How long can we continue to do so and can it be a coincidence that all the distinguished professionals in my area (my competitors) have changed direction and chosen to do something more rewarding than go head to head with the planning authority? I can only conclude that when my passion for historic buildings wanes and my work is no longer rewarding then it is time to hang up my set square and seek new pursuits (aka Slasher & Billhook).
