I received this very odd email recently and the content was ‘start conversations with listed building owners with this sentence.’ It’s a bit late for that and I am not so desperate for work to bother to force my services on just anyone since I have enough lovely clients who don’t need me to prove that I am competent.
This strange communication coincided with another one from a young person looking to transfer from the Boat Building Academy to the architectural profession which is to be applauded and encouraged. Not many young people can afford to study architecture – since the course is 7 years and although there are apprentices, many students won’t take them up for fear of missing out.
Student debt will haunt young people like a second mortgage, so apprenticeships are a sensible alternative to the last 2 years of full time education. If architectural practices, the university and RIBA share the cost 33% each way no one loses and the students emerge with a better grounding in the industry.
