This isn’t another rant about the need for joined-up thinking in planning although we could really do with some. What I am more interested in is bringing back the values that we all cherish.

‘If you don’t know the past how can you understand the present, and how can you plan for the future?’ asked Sir Norman Foster on the Today programme on VE Day. He is one of the great living architects whose work is so revered because he has understood and responded to its context.

In my personal life there may be degrees of pessimism and optimism but if you are an architect or are engaged in anything about building for the future then you are optimistic about the future.
