Simple answer – by listening carefully to their clients and managing their expectations while making a positive change with added value.
Of course not all projects involve creating a sense of place but most do by virtue of transforming an existing space into a new space, particularly when a room or building is being re-purposed.
I would like to think that I can make a difference to every project, especially when collaborating closely with artists / designers to incorporate a special feature – for example commissioning stained glass in new work and focussing a new opening on a framed view in the garden.
Providing that there is a rapport between the client and architect and both are open to new ideas at all stages then usually a harmonious outcome can be achieved through improved sustainability and being respectful of the significance of historic buildings.
